Competition for the new Gunyama and Green Square Aquatic Centre. The proposal relates to both the lineage of the site and its context – old and new – and introduces new urban landscapes and architectural forms that are highly functional and fun for the community. Urban aquaculture in the form of the dynamic aquaculture industry is a driving metaphor for our design response. Not as a superficial and literal theme but as a factor that anchors the design to the site’s history, hydraulics, industrial/ technological land use, topographic and regional context, the Green Square Town Centre and beyond. Seaweed/algae is an emerging industry that has multiple roles to play in the centre. We take its properties of being a water-borne simple-celled structure that is anchored to the shoreline – rocks or sand. It has the qualities of high growth rates, photosynthesis, strength and versatility that can be adapted to the site.
