CIVIC & COMMERCIAL
|
A competition proposal for a new civic centre incorporating the partial demolition of existing council administration offices and replacement with a new larger building, expansion of the existing theatre, erection of a new library and art gallery, and associated landscaping works, to be located in existing gardens surrounding Wagga Wagga's Wollundry Lagoon. Existing significant tress on the site have been preserved through the location and form of the art gallery and library. These buildings are adjacent to the theatre which has been expanded by raising the roof and adding a new tier of seating and additional lobby space. New Council administration offices located over five floors are designed as an addition to the remaining historic Council building. The art gallery comprises simple linear vaulted galleries and a more complex cultural sculptural component containing support spaces. The library wraps around the large platanus hybrida tree forming a sheltered and contemplative cloister onto which interior spaces face.
