A design ideas competition calling for proposals for regeneration of the waterfront areas of San Francisco, from China Basin to Fishermans Wharf. The thrust of the proposal is to improve the recreational character of the waterfront by the introduction af a park-like strip at the water’s edge and re-use of the piers, and to retain as many maritime-industrial usages along the waterfront as is feasible. The proposal recognizes the inherent interest of maritime, shipping, fishing and cruise activities to the public and their commercial value to the city. The comprehensive vision for a San Francisco Maritime Park makes suggestions for both specific physical interventions and usage. Priority has been given to the Embarcadero’s role as a major traffic thoroughfare. Attention has been given to the numerous piers and their maintenance, modification and re-use. The Maritime Park is a ‘breathing space’ for the city, a centre of maritime commerce, and the physical land-water edge connection of the city.
