Alterations and additions to a three storey 1880's terrace house for the two architect owners is for the transformation of a damp and derelict 3 storey Victorian terrace house into a light and airy 4 storey contemporary home. Constraints and limited resources provided the stimulus for creativity as the architects became owner builders. Design and history merge. The architect owners embarked on a slow and thoughtful rebuilding of the house restoring and amplifying its original grandeur, giving the 19th century housing form a 21st century life.
Four major works within house were undertaken:
- replacement of the original Level 1 ground floor with a suspended concrete slab, including an elaborate sub-floor ventilation, drainage and waterproofing system designed to protect the house from the damp problems rising from below
- replacement of the original separated staircases with a new multi-level steel and timber staircase integrated with an exposed rigid structural steel portal frame supporting loads above
- addition of a habitable attic room at Level 4 with an integrated ensuite and sweeping district views
- replacement and upgrading of all building services and environmental performance.
The historic street facade has been fully restored using original materials such as 19th century iron lace. Terracotta roof tiles have been replaced with corrugated metal roofing and a carefully proportioned traditional dormer. Iconic contemporary architecture has been sensitively designed for the locality. The new northern image of the building has a striking appearance, with its distinctive skillion attic dormer, exposed brick façade, reconstructed verandah and rooftop photovoltaic solar panels.
