A competition proposal for a new residential and commercial district for South Sydney, comprising apartments, commercial premises, parks, gardens and public facilities, and is based on typical eight storey buildings assembled to form blocks and courtyards of varying dimension. The general layout places a 3 storey commercial zone at the south and eastern perimeter of the site, and introduces a street pattern into the site which extends the street pattern of the neighbourhood. An east-west local park is proposed which gives cross views to Moore Park. A north-south linear park strip runs through the site as part of the new North-South Avenue described in the Green Square Masterplan. To create a character of diversity as is typical throughout the Sydney urban landscape the built elements of the proposal have been broken down into approximately 70 building blocks. Courtyards are an essential element of the design, creating defensible semi-public / semi-private realms within the larger open space network.
